Penny Collectors

How much is a penny with no markings worth?
I got a penny from my bank that has NO markings at all….the front and back are both smooth. It looks and feels like a real penny, but has no markings. Who would be able to tell me about it? A collector? Its cool looking, but not sure if its worth anything.
It sounds as though you have a penny blank that made it through the mint machinery without being struck. There are a few for sale on eBay at any given time, and they sell for between $1 and $5.
Here is a listing of penny blank errors presently for sale on eBay:

Collecting Sculpture in Early Modern Europe $75 Among the precursors of today’s public museums, perhaps the most important are collections of sculpture formed in the early modern era by royal families, aristocratic amateurs, and artists. In this, the first book to survey the practice of collecting sculpture from late medieval times to the 19th century, twenty renowned scholars explore the collections of eminent artists and great princes throughout Europe. The case studies examine acquisition methods and the value that collectors placed on sculpture—coins, reliefs, busts, and statues—for opulent interior decoration and outdoor display or for use as studio models. A wide range of topics is explored, including the appeal of antiquities, the Medici ivory collection, and the business of supplying garden statues in Northern Europe, as well as ways of displaying sculpture and the meanings it had when placed on the façade of a villa or in a palace garden. Together the essays allow a comparative reading of European sculpture collections and the motives underlying their formation.  |

Forestville, California (Images of America Series) $13.12 Visitors to Forestville are taken aback by its picturesque valleys laden with roaming vineyards. However, Forestville is more than a gateway to the Russian River; it is a diverse array of businesses, wineries, farming, and recreation. Forestville grew from the Spanish land grant traded by Capt. Juan Bautista Rogers Cooper from his brother-in-law Gen. Mariano Vallejo in 1834 into the town known by passing travelers as “Swindle Rig.” In 1867, the town was named Forestville after Andrew Jackson Forrister, a saloon owner. It was set apart from other settlements by having the first powered sawmill in California and the Faudré Chair factory, the largest manufacturing plant in Sonoma County of that era. Collectors still seek out the factory’s rawhide-bottom chairs. As a popular stop on the railway line, many vacationers from San Francisco passed through on their journeys to the Russian River. In 1963, the town continued to be different, setting aside land for a community youth park, so it is no wonder the town’s slogan is “Forestville the Great Life.” |

The Japanese Pottery Handbook $7.78 Everyone interested in pottery and crafts will find this practical guide a valuable addition to both bookshelf and workshop. Penny Simpson, an English potter living in Japan, and Kanji Sodeoka, her Japanese colleague, have compiled a step-by-step manual of the way pots are made in Japan, their forms, and their decorations. The authors give a thorough account of both traditional and modern techniques and also describe in detail tools, materials, glazes, and the setup of workshops and kilns. Lucy Kitto’s lettering and sprightly drawings infuse each page with life and clarity. Pottery terms and expressions are listed with their Japanese equivalents, making it possible for the Western potter to arrive at a more intimate understanding of Japanese pottery and, when necessary, to communicate with Japanese potters in their own language. A godsend to potters, students, and collectors, this book will be especially welcome to the growing number of potters who come into direct contact with their Japanese counterparts either at home or in Japan. |
