Should you clean Old Coins before selling them? Does it make them less valuable?

I’ve got some very old Silver Coins I’m wanting to sell, and most have many years of tarnish on them. Should I use the old silver polish and get them spiffy, or just take them as it to the Coin dealer.
Thanks to all that replied. Like I thought, the overwhelming majority said to not touch them at all. I’m heading to several coin dealers next week for appraisals. Thanks for the feedback!

I do consignment, and I never clean them. ALways better to leave it to an expert in the field.

Sweet Heart Dealer $10.17 One look at Scarling might suggest that they’re a new batch of goth-inclined neo-hipsters ready to sell themselves to America’s disaffected youth in the wake of the breakthrough of Evanescence. However, while a spin of their debut full-length, Sweet Heart Dealer, confirms that legions of mopey kids should go for this big-time, it’s also clear that this band has an awful lot more going for them than the surfaces might suggest. While dominated by the massive guitar sounds of Christian Hejnal and Rickey Lime, Scarling’s songs display a canny pop sensibility that bobs just beneath their aural surface, and former Jack Off Jill vocalist Jessicka’s voice seems to have gained some welcome depth and texture in the context of her new band. Hejnal and Jessicka have cited Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine as key influences on Scarling’s approach, and it shows — rather than going for standard-issue Marshall-stack crunch, Hejnal and Lime utilize feedback, drones, and floating masses of overtones to give these seven songs an attack that could be described as a loving pummel that embraces as it bruises. And you can actually sing along with “Band Aid Covers the Bullet Hole” without hurting yourself, which is no small feat. The Arms Dealer’s Daughter $14.38 Fans of Afro Celt Sound System and Mouth Music will immediately recognize Shooglenifty as something of a kindred spirit to those bands, mixing Celtic roots music with a kaleidoscopic array of rhythmic influences both ancient and modern and from points all across the globe. The Arms Dealer’s Daughter basically picks up where Solar Shears left off in 2001, delivering a mixed bag of tunes and rhythms that hits the spot more than it misses. Things get off to a pleasant, but not really compelling, start with four sets of original tunes, mostly written by fiddler Angus R. Grant and mandolin/banjo/bouzouki player Luke Plumb. Of these, the most exciting is the set that includes the title track and the raucously joyful “Aye Right.” Then things really pick up and get interesting: the “Nordal Rumba,” with its percolating combination of fiddle, Afro-Cuban drumbeats, and rollicking horns, is some of the most fun music recorded in this century; on “Maxine’s Polka,” the band dips into electronica textures and produces what may be the first junglist polka in the history of recorded Celtic music; “Fistful of Euro” is a dense and trip-hoppy fusion of Celtic and North African elements. “Carboni’s Farewell” gets a bit too long-winded for its own good, but the energetic reel set “Scraping the Barrel” puts things back on solid footing again. America’s Volume Dealer $9.58 After making headway into the ’90s alternative metal scene with a grungy, slowed-down version of their trademark punk-metal, COC (now the band’s official name, instead of just a widely accepted nickname) moved into the new millennium looking to keep up their momentum. Since their last album, 1996′s Wiseblood, the rap-metal subgenre had taken over the mainstream spotlight, so the band decided to take a slightly different direction on 2000′s America’s Volume Dealer — namely, playing up the Southern and classic rock tendencies in their more recent work. Metallica had moved into similar territory during the ’90s, but the transition was more natural for COC, who are not only from the South, but flavored some of their ’90s output with swinging boogie rhythms filtered through Black Sabbath. That sound is a little more funked-up here, and the band’s Southern tinge is more pronounced than ever — Warren Haynes (Allman Brothers, Gov’t Mule) lends his slide guitar to the Skynyrd-ish acoustic-driven ballad (!) “Stare Too Long.” What’s most immediately obvious, though, is that this is COC’s most radio-friendly record yet — the production is more polished, and while the guitars are still high-voltage, the sludgy murk of their most inspiringly heavy records is largely absent. Even if some fans might be disappointed that they have left the garage, the songs hold up well — they’re melodic and well-crafted, and there’s enough variety in the album’s pacing to keep it an engaging listen the whole way through. If there is a flaw, it’s that the added polish doesn’t really do COC justice. Word has it that the band conceives America’s Volume Dealer as their equivalent to Metallica’s so-called Black Album (indeed, a few songs like “Sleeping Martyr” are very reminiscent of that band’s later period), and it is definitely a logical way for COC to move toward greater commercial accessibility. However, even if it accomplishes that goal, it isn’t quite the radical departure or reinvention (as Metallica was) that will result in a hugely expanded audience; plus, the somewhat tamer, smoother-edged sound might make longtime fans uneasy.
